Because my wife is in a nursing home -- one of several types
of institutions specializing in reasonably comfortable, but very
expensive, accommodations for senior adults -- my finances,
which were looking better than for a long time, need careful
re-examination.Leave us begin with credit cards, most of which "save money" by allowing us to "take advantage" of golden, silver and brass opportunities, sometimes in very far away lands, where you can get great bargains by spending a few thousand to get there and, of course, back again (by this point in the sentence, I've forgotten who's taking advantage of whom). If I seem to be casting doubt on all these prospects and their premises, of course it is intentional. Anyway, back to my title, and the fact that I hold title to such a card, at least until AmEx gets tough with me, which I sincerely hope never happens.
To feel prosperous, I took out American Express a few years ago, and since I have an inherited Presbyterian conscience about money, I keep it paid with a warm feeling about these nice folks allowing me into this exclusive club of countless millions. I have an AmEx Gold Card, as well as a regular one, for all of which I pay an annual fee. But since these days there seem to be so many other credit angels offering me free money, I must stop and rein in the vanity, because that is all it is -- I refer you to Ecclesiastes: "All is vanity".
Unfortunately, since this is a blog post, which for me begins its life on the written page, my time has run out. To my credit, I've kept within my self-imposed one-page limit.

Have you thought about a 'tip jar' on your blog? I've never set on up but I'm sure it can't be difficult.
I like being able to use a tip jar to say thank your for a post that strikes a chord. I doubt that I'm the only person who would contribute. I'll be the first though, as soon as you set it up.

Follow the rules faithfully though. Don't solicit people in any way to click on ads.
I had a friend who generated nearly $200 /month with nothing like the traffic you get. He foolishly thought he was getting around the rules by instructing visitors that he wasn't allowed to solicit their clicks on the adsense ads that generated much needed money per click.
They shut down his add panel and refused to pay him for the two months he had it.
For bigger, slower bucks, definitely the
book. You might publish it desktop style and hawk it on your page.

They make some impressive claims.
Don - How about asking your local newspaper if they'd publish, and pay you for your writings (from the blog or others). There might be some kind of syndication in the local newspaper business, whereby columns are used in a variety of different publications, that would bring in even more revenue.
It's worth approaching someone in the business, I'd say, Don.

After reading it, I was momentarily transported to my own past and was with my grandfather picking green beans from his cottage kitchen garden. The sun was hot and I could smell the aroma of tomatoes, basils and oreganos. A quiet person of few words, his voice seemed resonant in memory.
It has been 19 years since he died and about 21 years since I was last with him in his garden at the lake. Those summer gatherings and dinners are of long ago. But thanks to memories of your own, the ones that you shared, I had a virtual plane ticket for a quick trip in memory and I thank you for that special moment.
Human memory does indeed seem to be able to give us flashes of those moments in life that are entirely humane. At the very least, it seems to me that those humane qualities are found in the truthfulness of your writing.

Those credit card companies really make their money on interest. If you don't pay them back immediatley, the amount you owe will begin to add up fairly quickly. One of my ex-roommates (or rather some bum who slept on my couch for a few months and didn't pay rent) had a credit card that he owed over 5k on because he made a $5 purchase several years before and never bothered to pay it off.
That's why so many retail companies are trying to make their own credit cards... so they can make a killing in interest. That being said... I suppose that's what people get for spending money they don't have. Granted, I don't have room to talk with over 5k in dept myself from credit card dept... the results of many plane flights to visit the woman who is now my wife.
Now, as a person in dept, I have no business suggesting how you could supliment your income. I say you just keep doing what you're doing and slap some adsense somewhere. It couldn't hurt, so long as it doesn't mess up the flow of the page. I also like the book idea that many people have suggested. Perhaps you could even go with an Ebook. They're cheaper to distribute... although easier to duplicate. You'll make more money selling an Ebook for $7.99 than a paperback for $19.95
It might be worth a shot anyhow.
